Another big day in the NFL today. The first game is an AFC matchup featuring one of the best wild card teams in recent memory in the Chargers. They travel to frigid Foxborough to take on the GOAT (Tom Brady) in what promises to be a great game. I like a lot of scoring in this one, mainly because Brady is great in the postseason at home, and the Chargers are really good on the road. The Patriots defense isn’t anything to marvel at either. It might be tough for the LA-based Chargers to acclimate to the cold, but Melvin gordon played college ball at Wisconsin, so he’s used to this. Go Points, Over 47.5.
The afternoon matchup has Nick ‘Can’t Lose’ Foles going to the Superdome where Sean Payton and Drew Brees have never lost a playoff game together. This seems like the same old story with Foles, coming off the bench to lead an unlikely playoff push and upset in the first round, so people are rallying behind the underdogs. I think Brees puts an end to that narrative. The Saints offense is so good, and the defense has played well above expectation this year as well. Eight points is a lot in a playoff game, but I trust the home-field advantage in New Orleans. Saints -8.
One more game for all the NBA fans in the audience. Houston goes to Orlando for a 6 o’clock tip that overlaps with the Saints game. Last night the Magic stunned the Celtics 105-103 in a victory that no one saw coming. I think this will be a bit of a letdown game for Orlando, on top of the fact that Houston is flat out the better team. Houston continues to shoot a million threes a game, and will see enough go in to cover that medium-sized spread. Rockets -6.
