Whew, lots of good games on the docket today. Before the NFL action kicks off, there’s a couple of CBB games that will have my attention. Texas Tech travels to Austin for a rivalry game against the Longhorns. If you read the Picks post earlier this week, you know I love the TTU defense. As you can tell by the comically low O/U in this game, Vegas thinks it will be a struggle offensively for both teams. TTU is ranked number 8 in the country for a reason, so I think they’ll go into Austin and steal a road win. Texas Tech +1.
The next game will bleed into the first NFL kickoff this afternoon, Kansas at Baylor starting at 4 pm. Kansas has lost its first two true road games of the year, and have never lost three straight under coach Bill Self. This Kansas team has the feel of one that will get it together in time to win another Big 12 title and possibly make a deep run in March. Baylor is stingy on defense, already holding three opponents under 50 points. I trust Self to right the ship and get a much-needed W. Kansas -3.5.
The first Divisional round game pits the red-hot Colts against the unstoppable Kansas City offense. I’ve got two picks for you in this one. First, let’s address the Under 56.5 pick. This might seem dumb based on watching KC on both sides of the ball this year, but Kansas City got 7 inches of snow overnight and the snow will continue throughout the morning, possibly until kickoff. I anticipate a sloppy snow game (which are great to watch) where offenses struggle to heat up. The spread pick also has a little bit to do with the weather, but more to do with Andrew Luck. There is no hotter team in the NFL than the Indianapolis Colts, and most of it has to do with Luck. The defense is also playing at a very high level, holding a strong Texans offense to just 7 point last week. It is obviously another story trying to stop this dynamic Chiefs offense led by Mahomes, but I see a close game coming, probably with the Colts losing a close one late. Colts +5.5, Under 56.5.
The nightcap of this eventful sports day is the Cowboys going to LA to face the Rams. The Rams are coming off a bye that allowed Todd Gurley to rest, while the Cowboys are fresh off a nail biter in the Wild Card round against the Seahawks. The Rams had an awful showing last year in the playoffs, getting bounced in their first game. McVay, Goff, and company must’ve learned their lesson this year. My only worry is Zeke Elliot going against the Rams awful run defense. If the Rams can get up early and force Dak to throw, they can create some turnovers and make this an easy victory. If the Cowboys get up early they can ride Elliot and control the ball. It all comes down to the first half, and I like the Rams at home. Rams -7.
